From the start of the school year, Rouen (Seine-Maritime) will set up a period of experimentation to test the free use of its public transport every Saturday, reports Le Parisien . If it bears these fruits, this measure could thus be extended, at a time when this service has suffered from the crisis linked to the coronavirus epidemic.

It is the new mayor of the city and president of the metropolis, Nicolas Meyer-Rossignol, who set up this initiative. This test will mean that all transport users will still have to validate their ticket, although it is free.

Limit the influx of cars

“We could see attendance increase by 30%” in public transport, relates the vice-president in charge of mobility, Cyrille Moreau. The environmentalist representative hopes that this approach will limit the presence of cars in the city.

“Choosing Saturday is also a way of supporting our merchants by facilitating access to the city center,” adds Nicolas Meyer-Rossignol. This explains that the cost absorbed by the community is equivalent to 1.5 million euros. Cyrille Moreau, meanwhile, hopes that this approach will create "a weekend effect" if it is also extended to Sunday.
