The Minister of Science and Innovation, Pedro Duque, will be a candidate for the Directorate General of the European Space Agency (ESA), the government reported this morning.

Pedro Duque has already formalized his candidacy to lead ESA , an intergovernmental organization dedicated to research and development of space programs, which combines the economic and intellectual resources of its 22 members to carry out programs and activities in the space field.

The minister, who joined ESA in 1992, after passing the tests to become an astronaut, has spent his entire professional career in this European agency and in the industry of the sector , holding various positions of responsibility.

The Government considers that it would be "an honor" for a Spaniard to head the European Space Agency for the first time. And he adds that "this candidacy is in line with the determined commitment of this Government to Science and Innovation as pillars for the economic reconstruction of our country and of Europe as a whole."

If Pedro Duque is elected, he would have to leave the post of minister , according to sources from the Executive.
