  • Architecture: China inaugurates Crystal, the tallest horizontal (yes, horizontal) skyscraper in the world

Just a few weeks ago, China announced the inauguration of Crystal, the tallest horizontal skyscraper in the world (15,000 square meters in area and 250 meters high), a building that directly leaked into the Guinness Book of Records. Now, repeat a feat with the longest glass bridge on the planet, 526.14 meters long, six wide and 100 high. Its inauguration, just a few days ago, brought the Guinness experts back to agreement , who came to the site to corroborate the figures.

The new bridge is located over the Three Gorges of Huangchuan , an impressive landscape immersed in nature surrounded by the Lianjiang River in Lianzhou, south of the Asian giant. The work is made up of 4.9 cm thick glass plates, with almost total transparency (99.15%), making the views impressive. In addition, each panel weighs 4.7 tons and can support more than 2,000 people at the same time, distributed on four different platforms with capacity for 500 people.

Its width of six meters also allows vehicles to pass through it and several car brands have already taken an interest in the place to advertise their models. With this new prodigy of engineering, China adds more than 2,000 glass structures throughout the country , one of its preferred architectural modalities, although this is the first to allow vehicle access.

Car access allowed

The catwalk has taken more than three years to build and its budget has exceeded 43 million dollars (about 37 million euros ). Despite its capacity, its purpose, at least for the moment, is solely for tourism. The construction, located in the province of Guangdong , beats the Asian giant's own brand, since three years ago it inaugurated what until now was considered the tallest and longest glass bridge on the planet. Its dimensions: 430 meters in length and 300 in height.

Other architectural follies

This building is located in the Zhangjiajie Natural Park , a natural wonder located in the center of the country and declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. It can be crossed by 800 people at a time, while in the new Asian whim the figure exceeds 2,000.

The previous record bridge of the Zhangjiajie Natural Park.

There is more. In the Hongtya valley there is another 488 meters, open since 2007. Another of the Chinese architectural follies is that of the Gulongxia footbridge , in the city of Quinyuan, a glass observation deck located 200 meters from the ground and protruding 700 meters from the edge of a dizzying cliff.
