UN JOUR UN TUBE (21/32) - All summer long, Europe 1 invites you to discover a song that marked the summer every day. Today, "Sugar baby love", from Rubettes.

Who hasn't heard it during a boom? Sugar Baby Love,  from the Rubettes, is THE hit of the summer of 1974. The title of a vintage, tangy group, whose members in white suits, with impeccable cut and sunshine smiles smell of dragibus… The title, sold at eight million copies, is their first single.

A French version by Dave

The Rubettes are inspired by doo-wop, a sub-genre of rhythm and blues popular in the early 1950s, led by the Platters or Moonglows. But in 1974 when this hit was released, we were in the era of glam rock, a musical movement born in the United Kingdom, where the Rubettes come from: when we think of glam rock we think of Roxy Music or David Bowie. Dandyism, eccentric clothes, and well-felt guitars.

In France, we know at the time the version of Dave, called Trop beau . Because in 1974, the French record company Les Rubettes did not believe too much in its success in France ... Dave then already represented the Netherlands at Eurovision and he resumed, in French, the same year as the Rubettes, their hit. This will be the artist's first big success, before Vanina - 1 million 45 Tours sold.

But it is indeed the Rubettes which "made" the hit of summer 74 with Sugar Baby Love. Although after a few years, fans get tired of their sweet pop and well in all respects ... preferring to turn to the Sex Pistols. The group broke up in 1979, leaving behind this hit, and ten albums.
