The authorities are monitoring the Pacaya volcano, located 20 km south of the capital of Guatemala and which is experiencing a significant increase in its activity. In recent hours, the volcano, which rises to 2,552 meters above sea level, has recorded explosions every minute and lava flows are constantly being expelled from its bowels, the National Coordination for Disaster Prevention said on Sunday (Conred ), in a press release.

According to the organization, the column of incandescent material rises up to 150 m above the crater.

No evacuation for the moment

The monitoring of eruptive activity continues, in coordination with the local communities installed on the slopes of the volcano. The images show serial explosions, although there has so far been no preventive evacuation of populations.

The previous eruption of Pacaya, on May 27 and 28, 2010, caused the death of a television journalist, who was hit by toxic gases during a report. The eruption of another volcano, the Fuego, 35 km southwest of the capital, caused one of the worst catastrophes in Guatemala in June 2018: a fiery cloud descending from the sides of the volcano had killed 202 villagers and 229 others had been reported missing.
