Thousands of people crowded the streets of Madrid to fire Benito Pérez Galdós. There are impressive photographs of the crowd, which stretched between Puerta del Sol and Plaza de la Independencia. The crowd was not made up of the reading and educated elites, but, necessarily, and to reach such a dimension, it was made up of people from the trades, including the famous Madrid dressmakers. The overwhelmingness of that concentration not only gives an idea of the popularity achieved by Don Benito, but of the enormous impact achieved then by literature, by the stories told by writers.
