“Renault will have to answer for its actions and its responsibilities”. The words are signed by the lawyer for the family victim of a dramatic road accident Monday evening on the A7 motorway. Five children aged 3 to 14 have died and four other family members from Vénissieux, in the suburbs of Lyon, are hospitalized in very serious condition. On Wednesday, investigators revealed that it was the breakage of the minivan's turbo that had caused the vehicle to run away. The latter, dating from 2005, caught fire before exiting the road then several barrels in a field near the town of Albon.

Asked about the antenna of France Info, the lawyer of the family, Me Nicolas Cellupica, explained "that no human fault is at the origin of the tragedy". According to him, it will be necessary to go back to “the responsibilities of the manufacturer” of the vehicle. The Renault minivan traveled “about 500 meters with a trail of white smoke” after the turbo broke. Without the braking system, the driver would have tried to stop by hitting the crash barrier. "What my client said before losing consciousness at the very beginning of the investigation corresponds perfectly to what emerges", recalled the lawyer on France Info.

The technical control "would not have changed anything"

In particular, the family council wishes to know who should be held responsible for this accident. "We must put all the cards on the table and see where exactly the problem comes from and who must be held responsible for this tragedy and this obviousness."

The survey produced by the departmental road safety squadron shows that the technical inspection of the vehicle should have been carried out in May. A delay had been granted by the state due to the coronavirus epidemic. For the lawyer, the passage to the control would not have changed anything, recalling that the turbo "is not a part which is examined".
