People with disabilities, especially women, are more victims of violence than the rest of the population, according to a study published Wednesday by Drees, the statistical institute of the Ministry of Solidarity and Health.

Overall, among the people identified as "disabled or having some discomfort or difficulties in daily life", more than one in four (25.2%) declared having suffered at least one attack (theft, threat or insult, physical violence or sexual), compared to one in five for the rest of the population.

Women particularly concerned

In detail, 7.3% of people with disabilities say they have suffered physical and / or sexual violence over the past two years, compared to 5.1% in the rest of the population). A similar difference exists for threats. Insults affect 15.4% of people with disabilities, against 14.1% of the population on average.

Women with disabilities are even more concerned: 9% have been victims of physical and / or sexual violence within or outside their household (compared to 5.8% of women without disabilities), of which 4% have suffered in particular sexual violence (against 1.7%).

Few complaints

Only a quarter of the victims went to the police station or the gendarmerie after the incident, of which nearly half lodged a complaint for physical or sexual violence. Victims or not, 17% of people with disabilities say they feel insecure in their neighborhood and 16% have already given up leaving their homes for safety reasons, against 11% and 9% of the rest of the population.

Concerning the complaints lodged by adult victims for sexual assault, a quarter of the incidents took place at their home, a quarter in specialized establishments (medico-educational institutes, establishment and service of assistance through work, health structures), a quarter in a home, and the rest in unspecified places. Regarding complaints of rape, nearly one in two (43%) took place at home, 27% in an establishment, 14% in a home, the rest in unspecified places.

For minors, the facts (sexual assault and rape) mostly take place at home or in specialized establishments.
