He decided to take the initiative to avoid a rebound in the coronavirus epidemic in his city. Jean-François Fountaine, the mayor of La Rochelle, signed a decree on Tuesday making it compulsory to wear a mask in the Old Port and the hypercentre of his town, from this Wednesday until the 31st August. A period when the capital of Charente-Maritime is very popular with tourists.

In a press release, the city indicates that "the wearing of a nasal and oral protection device such as protective masks meeting the technical characteristics defined by ministerial order or the so-called" barrier "fabric masks for any person aged 11 years and more, is compulsory in certain public spaces in the city of La Rochelle ”.

Closed public places are therefore no longer the only ones where this measure is compulsory. This is also the case in the Old Port area, the streets and shopping squares of the city center as well as all food markets, whether covered or not.

Sanctions from August

For the last days of July, the municipal authorities will be accommodating to those who have not integrated this new measure. "But sanctions can be applied from the beginning of August in the event of non-compliance with the device", warns the town which recalls that "the epidemiological context is less favorable since the start of the school holidays and in the face of the national finding of 'a decrease in the systematic adoption of preventive measures by the population'.

The only possible exemption is people with disabilities who have a medical certificate justifying this exemption and who implement health measures.
