A rescue in extremis. The Vietnamese authorities announced that they rescued a collared bear cub, just a few months old, on May 18, which was intended to be sold on the black market.

The animal, called Mochi, suffered from malnutrition. He was taken in and cared for by the NGO FOUR PAWS before being transferred to a sanctuary in Ninh Binh, in northern Vietnam, where 32 of his congeners are welcomed.

24,000 bears are said to be illegally exploited

The collared bear is a species classified as vulnerable, the sale of which is completely prohibited. However, a vast illegal traffic exists through Asia where 24,000 bears are currently illegally exploited on farms to collect their bile, used in some traditional doctors.
