A positive outcome. The new Interministerial Delegate for Road Safety, Marie Gautier-Melleray, has ruled out any increase in speed limits on the secondary network for the moment, indicating Monday that the lowering to 80 km / h had, after two years of experimentation, "demonstrated its effectiveness".

Asked during a press briefing on whether, from then on, the measure was definitively approved, Marie Gautier-Melleray replied that it was "not for her to [decide] on the future" and that " the measure [appeared] in the highway code ”.

349 lives saved in eight months

In support of her statement, she said that the measure had saved 349 lives outside the agglomeration and off the highway between July 1, 2018 (date of entry into force of the measure) and February 28, 2020, compared to the average from 2013 to 2017.

These figures come from the report delivered by Cerema (Center for studies and expertise on risks, the environment, mobility and development), which was commissioned by the Prime Minister at the time, Edouard Philippe, to take stock after two years.

Departments can raise the limit to 90 km / h

Edouard Philippe had introduced a re-vision clause on July 1, 2020.

Faced with the dissatisfaction of part of the population regarding the lowering to 80 km / h, perceived by some as liberticide and anti-rurality, the departments have, since the end of December 2019, the possibility of increasing the speed to 90 km / h maximum allowed on the network.
