Global warming could sign by the end of the century the virtual extinction of polar bears, unable to feed themselves in the absence of ice floes, according to a study published this Monday in Nature Climate Change.

If greenhouse gas emissions continue at the same rate as today, "the fall in reproduction and survival will endanger the persistence of almost all sub-populations by 2100", according to researchers, who note that even in a more favorable scenario, the extinction of these emblematic plantigrades of the Arctic would only be postponed.
