UN JOUR UN TUBE (13/32) - All summer long, Europe 1 invites you to discover a song that has marked summer every day. Today, the Macarena, from the Los Del Rio group.

We all know the  Macarena dance : hands in one direction then in another, which then touch the crooks of the arms, head and buttocks. It is above all this choreography which made the Macarena of the Spanish group Los Del Rio, the hit of the summer of 1996.

Hilary Clinton sways in the middle of a Democratic congress

But the Macarena has a political history, in any case it has served for Politics. She got involved, for example, in the campaign of Bill Clinton who was running for his second term. La Macarena was one of its flagship music during its meetings. Moreover, a video remains of this time: we see Hillary Clinton, in the middle of a Democratic Congress, who wiggles on the tube.

And the Clinton couple is not the first to have made the Macarena a political weapon. When it came out in a more rumba version in 1993, it accompanied the campaign of Governor Pedro Rossello, in Puerto Rico.

A tube, gold and platinum disc

The most popular version is the one remixed by the group Bayside Boys. It is thanks to this choreography, invented by the American dancer and choreographer Mia Frye, that the Macarena becomes a platinum or gold disc in many countries. It is also the biggest success of the Los Del Rio group. According to the BBC, in 2003, eight years after the release of Macarena , the two members of the group, Romero and Ruiz, would have earned $ 250,000 from this song.

La Macarena has been taken up and remixed many times, even by authors of the 1996s: in December, Los Del Rio released Macarena Christmas with dancers dressed in Christmas colors in the clip.
