The doctor skillfully practiced surgery on the left hand to treat the right hand

Recently, a video of a doctor using his left hand to operate a scalpel on his right hand has attracted netizens' attention. On July 16, a reporter from the Beijing Youth Daily learned that the doctor was Zeng Jianghua, a trauma orthopedic surgeon at the First People’s Hospital of Suining City, Sichuan, and the operation of this single person took place on July 7. The purpose was to treat himself for more than half a year. Stenosis tenosynovitis of the right radial styloid process. Dr. Zeng’s right hand has healed. He said that his surgery is to explore the minimally invasive treatment of tenosynovitis. From his current recovery situation, minimally invasive surgery is completely feasible, and he will try to promote it clinically in the future.

To explore minimally invasive therapy and decide to "practise"

Zeng Jianghua, 35 years old this year, is the "Ace Master Knife" of the hand microscopy of the Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics at the First People's Hospital of Suining. However, due to long-term fine microsurgery, his right wrist developed stenosis tenosynovitis of the right radial styloid process at the end of 2019. "The condition of my right hand is getting worse in the past two or three months. Sometimes my wrist is so painful that I can't move my thumb, my thumb can't be lifted up, and my palm can't be bent. It has already affected my surgical work." Zeng Jianghua told the Beijing Youth Daily reporter At the suggestion of his colleagues, he also practiced conservative treatment with wrist braces, but his wrist condition did not improve.

On July 7, 2020, Zeng Jianghua's right wrist was so painful that he could not move, and the department recommended that he rest. However, he knew that there were many patients undergoing microsurgery in the near future, so he refused to take leave. As an orthopedic surgeon, Zeng Jianghua knew that to quickly treat tenosynovitis of the right wrist, surgery was the only way. "I also thought about letting colleagues do it at the beginning, but the traditional surgical method requires a 3 cm long wound on the wrist. The anesthesiologist, surgeon, and nurse all have to cooperate, and it takes about two weeks to recover after the operation. In addition, I have always wanted to try to explore the minimally invasive surgical treatment of tenosynovitis, and it is good to take my own hands and practice."

The left hand to the right hand surgery for 3 minutes to complete

Zeng Jianghua recalled that after finishing his treatment on the afternoon of July 7, he began to prepare himself for surgery. Although in Zeng Jianghua's view, the operation of tendon sheath inflammation is the most routine operation, but he never tried it for himself. For this operation, Zeng Jianghua has already deduced many times in his mind, and he will practice repeatedly in the microscope after returning home from get off work.

On the day of the operation, he spread out the scalpel, disinfectant, anesthesia and other instruments, then disinfected his right wrist with his left hand, and then injected anesthesia. Then use the scalpel tip to cut a 0.3 cm opening in the skin and muscle of the inflamed tendon sheath, stretch the scalpel close to the bone, find the inflamed tendon sheath, and use the scalpel to separate the narrow area. And this series of sounding process was very stressful. Zeng Jianghua completed it in only about 3 minutes, and then the colleagues around him helped him to bandage.

Will try the clinical promotion of minimally invasive surgery

Speaking of performing an operation on himself this time, Zeng Jianghua appeared to be indifferent. Although his left hand was not his dominant hand, he also had a bit of psychological barrier when applying anesthetics, and the feeling of pulling the skin with the scalpel was clear; but in Zeng Jianghua's view, these were not enough to affect his surgical results. After the operation was completed, he did not even ask for leave to rest, but did not go to the operating table two days after the operation. "The wound is about 3 mm, and no stitches are needed, so it healed after two days of bandaging, and healed in less than a week. I am still very satisfied with the effect."

For Zeng Jianghua, the success of this operation not only means that he can quickly get rid of the pain and continue to work normally, but also means that he will have another choice when dealing with tenosynovitis of other patients in the future. "Although there has been no such minimally invasive tenosynovitis surgery on other people at present, but for patients with tenosynovitis, as long as the location of his lesion is determined, I can use this minimally invasive surgery. From surgery The difficulty is actually similar to the traditional way, but for patients, it can be completed without being hospitalized in the emergency room, and the recovery is fast."
