Dali City bought Fushou Snail Eggs at RMB 40 per kg

This stupid way can eliminate invasive species that are powerless

Recently, a large number of pink snail eggs have appeared on the reeds along rivers, ditches, paddy fields, and fish ponds from the Erhai Lake to the upstream Eryuan West Lake.

The Dali Municipal Government has recently issued a "Notice on Fully Implementing the Prevention and Control of Fushou Snails in the Erhai Basin", which requires manual removal to remove the Fushou snail eggs along the shore of the Erhai Lake, and will provide a subsidy award at a price of 40 yuan per kg of snail eggs.

In the area from Jiangwei Village to Shaping Village, Shangguan Town, Dali City, which is 15 kilometers apart, local villagers can be seen everywhere wearing rain hats and raincoats, busy searching for the eggs of longevity snails. An environmental defense battle against the invasion of alien species is being staged .

Introduced as food

But it was found that it is easy to cause "eat disaster"

Fushou snail, also known as big bottle snail, belongs to alien species and is called "giant snail".

It is understood that the snail is a dioecious, and its summer is the peak of its breeding season. It can lay eggs multiple times during mating. A female snail can lay eggs 20-40 times a year, and the annual egg production is 30,000-50,000. The fertility is very strong. Although the snail is a species of aquatic mollusk, it can be buried in wet soil for 6-8 months during the dry season. Adult respirator can reach 5-10 cm or even longer, they will become active again once the flood or the hidden farmland is irrigated.

The reporter from Science and Technology Daily learned that the tropical and subtropical areas of S. snail origin in Central America are widely distributed in more than ten countries in North America, Asia, Africa and other places. They like to live in fresh water with clear water quality and sufficient bait. Many groups inhabit the poolside. Shallow water. Fushou snails have a wide range of eating habits, and are omnivorous snails mainly based on plant-based bait. They mainly eat duckweed, vegetables, fruits, etc. They especially like to eat sweet foods and animal carrion in water.

"Fosus snail has a certain effect on the purification of water bodies, but if its population is too large, it will seize the bait resources of native snails and fishes, affecting the biodiversity of Erhai Lake." Dr. Guo Longgen, Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

"Chilled snail meat" is a favorite food of residents in Dali, Kunming, Yunnan and other places. The reporter of Science and Technology Daily learned that Fushou was originally introduced for the purpose of eating and breeding.

In the mainland of China, the snail was first introduced by Brazilian Chinese in 1981 and was farmed in Zhongshan City, Guangdong. At that time, it was regarded as a high-protein food. In 1984, S. snail was also used as a special breeding object in Guangdong Province, and was quickly introduced into Guangxi, Fujian, Sichuan, Yunnan, Zhejiang and other places. It was also propagated in many areas north of the Yangtze River in China.

However, it was later found that Fushou snail is an important intermediate host for the larvae of Guangzhou tube round wire. Some snails even contain up to 3000-6000 parasites. If not fully heated, people will cause serious parasite infections after eating and produce headaches. , Fever, neck stiffness and other symptoms, severe cases can cause dementia or even death.

"It must be cooked thoroughly before consumption. Never eat raw or half-life, and do not eat cold salad or barbecue snail." Guo Longgen reminded.

Manual elimination is the most reliable

Chemical and biological treatment is not feasible

After artificial introduction into Taiwan and southern parts of China, Fushoulu lost its original natural enemies, and these areas, and local climate conditions are very conducive to its growth and reproduction, so Fushouluo family is growing stronger in these areas.

"Wetland aquatic and lakeside terrestrial plants play an extremely important role in the protection and management of the Erhai Lake. Fushou mainly feeds on lakeside aquatic weeds and coastal crops, and the amount of food is very large, which can easily damage the local wetland ecosystem and agricultural ecosystem." Yang Junxing, a researcher at the Kunming Institute of Zoology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told reporters that in 2003, the snail was listed as one of the first 16 alien species that invaded our country.

In recent years, snails have been found in paddy fields, wetlands, and lakeside zones in the Erhai Lake Basin in Dali, Yunnan.

It is understood that since June this year, Dali City has dispatched more than 130 people every day to clean the snails and snail eggs in the waters of towns and villages along the Erhai Lake, and cleans snail eggs by nearly 30 kilograms per day. Recently, with the increase in the egg production of the snail, more than 450 people are dispatched every day, and more than 400 kg of snail eggs can be cleaned out every day. All towns and townships will harmless the snails and snails they salvaged. After drying, they will be burned and buried.

Can the snail be eliminated through chemical drugs or biological treatment?

Yang Junxing told reporters that the current manual collection of snail eggs and fishing for snails may seem "clumsy", but in fact it is the most effective method. As long as we seize the opportunity and concentrate on the implementation, there will be certain effect.

"The use of chemical drugs will inevitably pollute water bodies and cause harm to other aquatic species; as far as the current situation is concerned, it is not feasible to adopt biological treatment of "one thing falling one thing", because the Erhai Lake is like other plateau lakes in Yunnan. For a long time, a basic balance of various organisms has been formed. Introducing new species to eliminate S. elegans may destroy this balance, but it will outweigh the gains." Yang Junxing said.
