Claire Hédon, the new Defender of Rights. - Isa Harsin / SIPA

It's official. The appointment of Claire Hédon, journalist and president of the NGO ATD-Quart Monde, to the position of Defender of rights, was ratified on Wednesday by the Parliament. She replaces former Minister Jacques Toubon.

At 57, Claire Hédon is appointed, on the proposal of the Elysée Palace, for a six-year term at the head of this independent authority whose purely advisory opinions have imposed themselves in public debate. She is a radio journalist and president since 2015 of the association for the fight against poverty ATD-Fourth World.

The institution has gained visibility

Jacques Toubon, who was notably Minister of Justice from 1995 to 1997 under the presidency of Jacques Chirac, is due to leave office at the end of July. Under his mandate, the institution gained visibility and became a watchdog for public freedoms.

During her hearing on Wednesday in the Senate and then in the National Assembly, Claire Hédon declared that she wanted to place herself in "a demanding succession" of Jacques Toubon and work on "the effectiveness of all rights for all, whether economic, socio-cultural, civil or political, without hierarchy ”.
