People, during confinement, line up in front of the IHU in Marseille to undergo a coronavirus screening test - Gérard Julien / AFP

  • Annie Levy Mozziconacci, doctor at the northern hospital of Marseille, "sounded the alarm after a doubling of contamination every 48 hours in Marseille".
  • Professor Didier Raoult's ARS and IHU deny this figure: there were on average eleven new infections each day last week.
  • The ARS nevertheless recalls that it is necessary to respect the barrier gestures and the wearing of the mask while the health agency notes "weak signals reporting new cases of Covid-19".

She went around the media to "sound the alarm." Doctor Annie Levy-Mozziconacci, from the northern hospital in Marseille, alerted this weekend of July 14 on "a potential increased risk of Covid-19". "We are worried because we see in Marseille that the cases of contamination seem to have increased for ten days with a doubling of the number of positive cases every two days," she explains, with other colleagues, in a press release sent on Monday , and repeated on several media since.

"We are asking ARS Paca to urgently put in place the financial and human resources promised at the end of the containment, as well as the brigades intended to support this period of deconfinement." We are also proposing to the city of Marseille to set up as a matter of urgency, a "Covid" unit on which it can rely in order to monitor the development of the situation on a daily basis and effectively coordinate with the various territorial players the measures to be taken and the means to be deployed to prevent us from finding ourselves in a health and human crisis situation in the heat wave in the next 15 days, ”they wish.

Eleven new cases per day on average

The regional health agency Paca explains meeting "weak signals reporting new cases of Covid-19. In the Bouches-du-Rhône department for the week of July 6 to 12, eleven new positive cases were detected on average per day, for more than 15,000 tests carried out ”. "For several weeks, the epidemiological indicators of the circulation of the virus have been falling or have remained at low levels in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur," said ARS in a press release on Wednesday.

As for Professor Raoult's IHU Mediterranean Infection, the figures put forward by Annie Levy Mozziconacci are categorically denied. "We note contaminations, clusters, and new imported cases, but we are on an average of eleven new cases per day and not a doubling every 48 hours", we advance. The AP-HM also explains that each new case requiring hospitalization is referred to Professor Raoult's IHU.

As for Public Health France, the data listed show 22 new cases on July 3 in Bouches-du-Rhône, new on July 4, one on July 5, July 21, July 19, July 19, July 46 July, 56 on July 9, then 22 people on July 10. The number of new cases increases, but does not double every 48 hours.

A new thrill in the number of cases

Annie Levy-Mozziconacci explains that she is based on a graph from the IHU presenting the proportion of positive people among those tested. "Last week we noticed that this proportion went from one to two, from three to five, don't you call that doubling you?" ", She defends herself.

"It is true that we see that new people come to be tested at the IHU, and a new tremor in the number of cases for a fortnight. But there is a big relaxation in the respect of the barrier gestures and the wearing of the mask ”, we relativize the AP-HM.

The ARS explains that “each signal is analyzed”. “People screened are called to identify their contacts, screenings of risky contacts are organized for family members as well as for people in the friendly, professional network and isolation measures are recommended. The ARS remains vigilant on these signals and reminds more than ever citizens to respect barrier gestures and to wear masks and to avoid large gatherings. Actions have been initiated and will be amplified in the maritime stations and in the airports for the travelers arriving from countries at risk ”, details the health agency.

Take the lead

But this alarm bell could hide another objective. "It is a stroke of com ', it puts pressure on the town hall won by the Printemps Marseille which has removed it from the 1-7 sector", believes a medical source.

Annie Levy-Mozziconaci explains that she is in contact with Michèle Rubirola, the new mayor of Marseille, and doctor. “We wanted to sound this alarm bell faced with the slowness of setting up a monitoring device during confinement. We wrote this press release at the end of last week when we noticed a start of a thrill, if we ever let this milestone pass, the small increase can become significant. We want coordination in this follow-up, ”she says.

A follow-up had been set up jointly by the ARS and the prefecture of Bouches-du-Rhône against the outbreaks of contamination of seasonal workers in the west of the department, which was "brought under control" at the end of last week.
