Exemption from Tokyo accommodation tax until the end of September next year 13th July 11:10

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government will exempt the “accommodation tax” collected from people who stay at hotels in Tokyo from this month until the end of September next year when the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games are over.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has introduced an "accommodation tax" for people who stayed at hotels and inns in Tokyo since 2002 in order to utilize it for measures to promote tourism.

If the room charge per person per night is 10,000 yen or more and less than 15,000 yen, it will be 100 yen, and if it is 15,000 yen or more, it will be 200 yen, but it will be exempted from this month until the end of September next year.

At the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, which was scheduled to be held this month, it was a measure to welcome people from inside and outside the country and reduce the burden, but since the event was postponed for one year in the capital, it will be initially until the end of September. This means that the exemption period will be extended until the end of September next year when the tournament ends.

According to Tokyo, the accommodation tax will continue to increase in the last few years as the number of foreign tourists increases, and the tax revenue in fiscal 2019 is expected to reach approximately 2.7 billion yen.
