40% of Spaniards declare that they are afraid of contagion, according to a study by Ipsos , which concludes that these are the European citizens who feel most threatened by the coronavirus today, above Italians, British and French.

These are data from the third wave of the study, carried out between June 25 and 28, among 16,000 adults from 18 to 74 years old in Canada and the United States and from 16 to 74 years old in Australia , Brazil , China , France , Germany , Italy , Spain , India , Japan , Mexico , Russia , South Africa , South Korea and the United Kingdom .

The data reflects two realities: on the one hand, the desire to recover normality before the pandemic and, on the other, fear of the virus, which has increased with the appearance of localized outbreaks.

Thus, the Spanish population is divided regarding the revival of the economy, with 58% believing that businesses should open but with almost 40% claiming to be afraid of contagion.

Half of Spaniards (51%) admit to feeling anxiety when thinking about resuming their routines, a percentage below the global average, but they are the second in Europe to have that feeling, second only to the British (62%). The level of anxiety of the Spanish is increasing and since May 10 it has increased by 5 points, a situation that is also repeated in Germany and the United Kingdom .

Regarding the revival of the economy in the face of the health risks that this implies, Spanish public opinion has also undergone a change of opinion regarding this issue.

Although there was an upward trend from May 24 to June 7, going from 49% to 58% in favor of the economic reopening, this trend is currently beginning to experience a slight decline. However, almost six out of every 10 Spaniards agree that the economy must be reactivated and business must be allowed to open.

Holidays are a risk

The study also reveals that most Spaniards agree on the risks involved in returning to normality, especially in activities such as local and national celebrations, with more than eight out of ten Spaniards who consider it so.

They also consider taking a vacation (75%), eating in a restaurant (59%), going to parties with friends and family (58%) and going to beauty salons, hairdressers or spas (51%) as risky.

On the contrary, the activity that the Spanish population considers safer is shopping, with only 37% of citizens saying otherwise.

After three weeks living in the new normal, more than half of Spaniards believe that recovering the life prior to the Covid-19 will not take place within a year or two, or even more, making Spain the most European country pessimistic in this regard, and the third worldwide.
