Prime Minister Jean Castex in Dijon on July 10, 2020 - JC Tardivon / SIPA

Prime Minister Jean Castex praised the memory of the “cowardly assaulted” bus driver on Friday in Bayonne on Friday, assuring that “justice will punish the perpetrators of this abject crime”.

According to the Bayonne prosecution, the man was the victim of an "extremely violent" assault when he wanted to control the ticket of one person and demanded the wearing of the mask for three others.

Aged 22 and 23 and known to police, two men suspected of having carried out the blows were indicted this week for attempted homicide and imprisoned, a legal qualification which will evolve due to the death of the victim.

"We will take requisitions for additional indictments" against the two suspects for "intentional homicide on a public transport network agent", explained the prosecutor of the Republic of Bayonne, Jérôme Bourrier, who confirmed the death.

Two other individuals, in their thirties, were imprisoned, in particular for "failure to assist a person in danger". The bus drivers of the network of the agglomeration of Bayonne, who had exercised their right of withdrawal after the assault of their colleague on Sunday evening, will resume work on Monday "under conditions of reinforced security", announced Friday the operator of Keolis transport.
