The title is a bit misleading since this novel does not tell the story of any beauty contest. Finally, more precisely, becoming Miss Iceland is the fate which Hekla absolutely wants to escape. This young woman, who bears the name of a volcano, is destined for writing. Only here, at the beginning of the 60s, in this patriarchal and conservative Iceland, to convince an editor, and to assert oneself as an author when one is a woman, one needs a sacred tenacity and a lot of courage. Hekla fortunately does not miss it.
