What does 5G change for us? - 20 Minutes

If you got stuck on WAP to download ringtones, you may be surprised by the arrival of 5G. This new technology should soon be implemented in France and land on your mobile phones (among others) by the end of 2020. But concretely what will it change?

10 times faster than 4G

This new standard could achieve much higher speeds, up to 10 times the average speed of 4G. Conversely, the latency time for data to be transmitted will be greatly reduced, divided by 10 compared to 4G, which will allow in particular to offer better quality of streaming or to view videos in 8K. Its use should not be limited to mobile phones. Many sectors could also benefit from it such as: health, the smart city or transport.

Critics even before its deployment

But 5G does not make everyone happy. Several elected environmentalists have already said they are against its deployment. At the beginning of July 2020, the mayor of Grenoble, Eric Piolle, explained on his Twitter account that he had sent a letter to the government "to ask for a moratorium" on this new technology, just like Delphine Batho, deputy EDS (Ecology, Democracy, Solidarity).

# 5G📡📲 Telephony operators are taking legal action against the City of Grenoble because we are blocking the work (started in secret ...) on the antennas. I will continue to ask for a moratorium: nothing is clear on health and I am skeptical about the hypernumerization of our lives pic.twitter.com/SNNLCkWUMK

In January 2020, two NGOs had also filed an appeal with the Council of State against the call for candidates launched in December for the allocation of 5G frequencies.
