Flying foxes from the Croisic Océarium - Océarium du Croisic

  • The animals are generally transferred to other basins, within the framework of French or European exchanges.
  • But the fruiting eggs were very numerous in 2019 at the Océarium, which decided to release 30.

Unleashed, freed ... It's the big day for around thirty dogfish from the Croisic Océarium. This Thursday afternoon, these small spotted sharks will leave the tunnel of the Loire-Atlantique aquarium where they were born to discover the vastness of the ocean. "An exceptional action in the world of aquariums," says the Océarium. Because in normal times, like zoological parks, animals are transferred to other basins, within the framework of French or European exchanges…

Except that this year, there have been too many. “There were a large number of fruit bat laying in 2019 (more than 60 individuals) and discussions have already taken place. It was therefore decided to release around 30 specimens on an Atlantic beach ”. The Océarium explains this particularly high fertility by the "constant progress" made in terms of living conditions.

Rays and lobsters too

The release of these harmless fish, which currently measure about ten centimeters, will take place at 2:30 p.m. in the presence of twenty children. Then, we should not worry too much about these fruit bats, which are already very numerous to frequent our coasts. "These are common species," confirms Céline Tessier, executive assistant. We chose a point of wild coast where there are rocks, which allow the animals to hide. Just make sure they get used to the water temperature. "

In 2018, the phenomenon had already occurred in brown rays. Here again, around thirty of these small rays were released by the trainers. "Even if aquariums improve our knowledge of the species, we are always delighted to see fish joining the ocean," continues Céline Teyssier. Thirty flying foxes are just a gesture, but it is a way to raise awareness of respect for the oceans, to remind people that fish live there, and that we have to stop with plastic and pollution. More regularly, these are also small lobsters, aged between 3 and 15 months, who find the ocean.
