  • Supporters of the reunification of Brittany have long called for a referendum.
  • The demand is even more pressing since the appointment of an assistant to the town hall of Nantes in charge of Breton issues.
  • While the issue of reunification will be raised this Thursday at the Brittany regional council, the association A la bretonne is putting pressure on President Loïg Chesnais-Girard.

Administrative or historic Britain? Four or five departments? The question of the reunification of Brittany is a real sea serpent and divides on both sides of the border. But the fact is that, since the first demonstrations in the 1970s, the debate has never been really settled. It will return to the table again on the occasion of the plenary session of the Brittany regional council which is held this Thursday and Friday in Rennes. In particular, the conclusions of a report containing 13 recommendations "concerning cooperation between Loire-Atlantique and administrative Brittany with a view to reunification" will be presented.

I congratulate myself but sometimes I have the impression of being Bill Murray in "Un jour sans fin", reliving the same events over and over again.

I am afraid to see the reunification of #Bretagne on the agenda of the session of the regional council in 2042 .... 😭 https://t.co/ejqjypfSKQ

For Loïg Chesnais-Girard, president of the Brittany region, this marriage could also materialize in the coming years. "We may live during the next term the last term of a president of a Brittany region of four," said the elected socialist.

But before celebrating the wedding, it will be necessary to go through a consultation of the citizens. The Brittany region is in any case ready to organize a possible referendum on the issue with a sum of 100,000 euros which was supplied during the February session. "Now the ball is in their court," said Loïg Chesnais-Girard, addressing his colleagues from Loire-Atlantique.

On the banks of the Loire, the municipal campaign has in any case reshuffled the cards. Not particularly in favor of reunification, the mayor Johanna Rolland thus surprised many people on July 3 by appointing for the first time an assistant who will be in charge of Breton issues. "The act is historic," says Christophe Prugne, president of the association A la bretonne, which has just seen the light of day. "We see that there is a political opening on both sides of the border and that something is emerging in favor of reunification," he said.

"Nantes in Brittany! should no longer be a simple slogan "

His association intends to weigh any case in the debate "in an educational, militant and constructive approach". Feeling the wind turn, the collective does not want to waste time. In an open letter addressed today to Loïg Chesnais-Girard, the supporters of reunification thus ask the president of the Brittany region to "commit" to a referendum, and quickly.

“For the first time, Nantes, the leading Brittany metropolis and essential partner for reunification, is opening up to this project. This event calls for a rapid reaction from the Brittany region to finally make concrete progress on the file, ”said the association A la bretonne in its letter. "Nantes in Brittany! should no longer be a simple slogan chanted here or there. As president of the regional council of Brittany, the ball is now in your court, "concludes the missive. The ball is therefore in both camps, the tennis game therefore promises to be animated. And its outcome still uncertain.
