It is not a second wave. But the contagion curve in Spain does not drop completely. Outbreaks are the brake and since the end of the state of alarm, on June 22, cases have risen by almost 30%. This is that the number of weekly infections has increased. From 1,818, to 1,956 a week ago to 2,347 this Monday.

The outbreaks that have taken a step back in the new normality added more than a thousand cases this weekend and put a completely 'favorable' evolution of the pandemic on the ropes, since after the decline that had been achieved so far , compromises the expectations of Fernando Simón, director of the Center for Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies, in the medium term. "At the turn of the summer, there will be little [transmission of the virus]," he speculated this Monday at the press conference on data balancing.

Thus, the last 15 days are marked by a rise in daily cases: in the week of June 22 to 28, an average of 279.4 infections were detected daily, while the last week, from June 29 to July 5, were 335.3. Along with these data, the intensity of the outbreaks has also led to an increase in the positive cases detected from the study of close contacts: from 86, to 170 and 238 in the last week. This suggests that, despite the operation of the surveillance systems, their work has been intensified since the end of the state of alarm.

Within the still photo that reflects the daily figures, this Tuesday the outbreaks caused a new spike in the number of those infected by the Covid-19 pandemic. The updated figures from the Ministry of Health released reveal an increase in the number of infections with 124 new positives, 46 more than the previous day, when 78 were reported. Most of them are located in Catalonia, with 36; followed by Aragon, with 26. Madrid, meanwhile, reports 22.

The number of deceased, according to the official count, also rises slightly compared to the previous day. Specifically, there are four new deaths (three on Monday) in the last 24 hours. Thus, there are already a total of 28,392 people who have lost their lives since the start of the pandemic.

Another of the data, which does not drop, refers to hospitalizations. A section in which Simón stopped this Monday about the Lleida outbreak, but applicable to the rest. "Hospital admissions are not good news." In fact, Public Health experts say so: it does not matter the increase in cases, if it does not translate into a disease that requires hospital care. Thus, the latest number of hospitalizations points to 157 people in the last seven days (138 the previous day), with which there are already a total of 125,616 since the start of the pandemic. Of these, seven patients have entered the ICU in the last week and none in the last hours, so that the total admissions in this hospital unit remains at 11,706.

Imported cases also add up. At the moment, there are only 53 as Simon pointed out this Tuesday, since the borders were opened. It should be remembered that up to 38 positives from an outbreak in Murcia are due to this type of transmission.

In this increase in positive cases, it should also be noted, as the director of the CCAES recalled on Monday, that there is a lot of symptoms: up to 70%. From Health, the official position on the role of these people in transmission is unknown and it has been pointed out that there are studies that show that they can transmit "little". In this sense, it is worth insisting on the fact that new cases are currently detected much earlier.

However, there are recent scientific works that point to a clear transmitting role of the asymptomatic in this pandemic. A study by Imperial College London suggests that transmission of asymptomatic and presymptomatic patients contributes significantly to the spread of the disease. In this paper, published in Nature , lead author Andrea Crisanti, professor in the Department of Molecular Medicine at the University of Padua and in the Department of Life Sciences at Imperial College, explains that "despite this silent and widespread spread , the disease can be controlled. "

With all this, Spain only adds cases to the world peak. The director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has warned that the transmission of the new coronavirus is accelerating worldwide and that the peak of the pandemic has not yet "been reached".
