The absence of Pedro Sánchez from the State funeral in memory of the victims of the pandemic is not without stale anticlerical borders . Perhaps the President of the Government has considered, in a show of confusion, that his presence in a cathedral is incompatible with the non-denominational character of the State . But it is not only compatible but advisable, since most Spaniards confess themselves to Catholics - for beliefs, customs and culture - and find in Christianity protection and consolation in the difficult moments of death. The role of the president in these acts is symbolic, not religious . It is not understood that the Kings attend and the president looks for a subterfuge to not go.

Sánchez repeats in disdaining all the victims of Covid - both those who were Catholic and those who were not - with his calculated absence at the funeral mass that Cardinal Carlos Osoro offered yesterday in the Cathedral of La Almudena, along with others bishops, such as the president of the Episcopal Conference, Juan José Omella , and members of other religious denominations. The act was chaired by the Kings and the Infantas, without for that reason, as it has happened countless times, the non-denominational nature of the State has been questioned.

To excuse his absence, Sánchez improvised an express trip yesterday to Lisbon -which was not foreseen in his agenda- to have lunch with Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa , with whom he already spoke extensively last week and with whom he will meet soon. With the Falcon, Sánchez could have arrived in time to attend the religious event in Madrid and have shown the obligatory institutional respect towards those who died from the pandemic , accompanying their relatives in their mourning.

If he did not, it was because for him - but also for Iglesias and Illa - the deaths as a result of the coronavirus are a political problem and the confirmation of his negligent management of the health crisis . That is why they try to hide them, as TVE did when they refused to offer the funeral live , an unprecedented decision that continues to alienate the public chain from the Spaniards who pay it to put themselves at the service of the Government.

Sánchez took weeks to decree the official mourning and ignores the recommendations of the WHO and the INE reports, refusing to make a realistic count . On the 16th, not all of them - more than 43,000 - will be honored, but only those that Illa and Simón consider official victims. It is obvious that this act, to which Sánchez will turn, does not intend to pay tribute to the deceased but to launder the management of his government and introduce a new element of tension, contrasting a lay funeral with a religious ceremony . Sánchez's sectarianism emerges intact from the pandemic.
