Ennio Morricone died at the age of 91. The Italian composer died in a hospital in Rome from the consequences of a fall, writes the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera .

Morricone's family says that the composer died on the night of July 5-6. The funeral is performed in private.

He is considered one of the most influential film composers of the twentieth century. His soundtrack to the western Once Upon a Time in the West became one of the most successful film music albums ever with over ten million copies sold.

In his career, Morricone composed over 500 soundtracks for films and television. His works include songs for films such as the aforementioned Once Upon A Time In The West , The Untouchables and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly .

In recent years, Morricone also collaborated with the American director Quentin Tarrantino on the film The Hateful Eight . Morricone received an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA Award for his work on that film.

Morricone performed in a sold out Ahoy in 2017. Two years earlier he gave a performance in the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam.
