In the United States, the number of daily coronavirus infections rises to new highs. Within the past 24 hours, Johns Hopkins University identified 57,683 new corona infections in the United States. The number of corona deaths rose by 728 to 129,405 cases. In total, nearly 2.8 million Americans have now contracted the virus since the pandemic broke out.
The United States is the most affected country by the epidemic. Infection numbers are increasing in 37 of 50 states. The virus is particularly prevalent in the south and west of the USA. In addition to Texas, California and Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee are coronavirus hotspots. Over 55,000 new infections were identified in the United States on Thursday alone - no other country has recorded such a rapid spread.
This number may even double. Chief virologist Anthony Fauci said on Tuesday at a hearing in the U.S. Senate that the number of new infections per day in the country could rise to 100,000. That's why he was "very concerned". In the state of Alabama, there were reports that students at parties intentionally contracted the virus.
The states have reacted differently to the worsening situation. In Miami, the largest city in the state of Florida, the mayor has imposed a night-time curfew between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. until further notice.

Infection also overshadows the U.S. National Day, which traditionally brings Americans together for celebrations and fireworks. Health experts called for caution. Despite the warnings, U.S. President Donald Trump plans to attend an event at Mount Rushmore, South Dakota, which is expected to attract 7,500 visitors. Masks should be provided, but there is no obligation to wear them. South Dakota governor Kristi Noem told Fox News this week that those who had concerns should stay at home. "We will do without social distancing ."
The sharp rise in new infections is also noticeable in top American sports. Prior to resuming training, 31 players and seven US Baseball League employees had tested positive. According to the league and player union, 19 of the 30 clubs have coronavirus cases. It is therefore uncertain whether the baseball season can start as planned. Due to the pandemic, training had already been interrupted in mid-March and the original season opener had been postponed to July 23.
