Nobody has forgotten the Diamond Princess, the anxiety vessel where nearly 4,000 people, including 700 tested positive for Covid-19, remained in quarantine on board the whole of February off Japan.

Other vessels have also been “contaminated”, such as the Zaandam, the Coral Princess and the Costa Magica. The company that owns this latest boat, Costa Cruises, the world number one in the sector, does not want to relive a situation like this right away.

Globally, the cruise industry generates over $ 150 billion in economic activity every year, supporting 1.17 million jobs.

It announced this Friday the extension until August 15 of the suspension of its cruises in the world as well as the cancellation of all its summer cruises in Northern Europe. Its vessels should have returned to sea on July 31.

Port constraints

"This decision is linked to the uncertainty of a gradual reopening of ports to cruise ships and the restrictions that may still be in place for the movement of people due to the global pandemic Covid-19," said the cruise line operator in a communicated. It cancels "all future Costa Victoria cruises" without further details.

The cruise line also does not want to be confronted with what the passengers of the Costa Deliziosa, a boat that left Italy at the beginning of January with around 2,200 people who sailed around the world, could not experience anywhere.
