Cartridges of this diverted gas are found in the gutters - F. Binacchi / ANP / 20 Minutes

  • The town hall of Cannes has just taken two orders to try to curb the diversion of nitrous oxide, consumed "by inhalation as a drug".
  • Until September 30, businesses are prohibited from selling them to minors while detention and consumption are also prohibited in the city center.

These small cartridges are blooming everywhere in the gutters or on the beach ... And beyond the environmental alert, it is above all the health concern which pushed the mayor of Cannes to take a stand, because the trend is growing, especially in very young people, and the potentially very serious health effects.

It concerns the diversion of the "proto", the nitrous oxide consumed "by inhalation as a drug" most often in balloons.

Filling a "legal vacuum"

David Lisnard (LR) has just taken two orders to regulate, during at least the summer, the purchase and use of this "hilarious" gas normally used in whipped cream siphons. A first in the Alpes-Maritimes department. Until September 30, businesses are prohibited from selling them to minors under penalty of a fine (38 euros). Detention and consumption are also prohibited in the city center and on the coast.

“We are faced with a legal vacuum. While waiting for a law, the mayor preferred to take the lead while we see the phenomenon becoming widespread, explains to 20 Minutes the director of the municipal police Yves Daros. Groups form and consume it. "

Neurological accidents and disorders

At the beginning of June, supported by "reports from the police and gendarmerie services" indicating "an increase in the diverted use of nitrous oxide cartridges", the prefecture had itself launched the alert. Because of the dizziness and discomfort that gas can cause, "the first risk is that of accident and endangering the life of others" pointed in particular the state services.

They also recalled that "the Directorate General of Health had warned against this misuse, following the alarming increase in serious neurological disorders linked to this practice".
