China News Agency, Geneva, June 30. The 44th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council opened in Geneva on June 30. On the same day, Cuba made a joint statement on behalf of 53 countries, supporting China’s Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to safeguard national security legislation.

In his speech, the representative of Cuba stated that non-interference in the internal affairs of sovereign countries is an important principle of the Charter of the United Nations and a basic norm of international relations. National security legislation belongs to national legislative power, which is true of any country in the world. This is not a human rights issue and should not be discussed in the UN Human Rights Council.

The representative of Cuba emphasized that all countries have the right to pass legislation to maintain national security and appreciate measures taken for this purpose; welcomes the adoption by the Chinese legislature of the “Law on the Maintenance of National Security of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China” and reiterates its adherence to the “One Country, Two Systems” policy. It is conducive to the stability of "one country, two systems" and the long-term prosperity and stability of Hong Kong. The legal rights and freedoms of Hong Kong residents can be better exercised in a safe environment.

The representative of Cuba reiterated that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is an inseparable part of China. Hong Kong affairs are China’s internal affairs. The outside world should not interfere and urge relevant parties to stop using Hong Kong-related issues to interfere in China’s internal affairs. (Finish)
