Efficient flight planning of tankers Calculated by AI Huge number of combinations in minutes, July 1: 6:29

A petroleum ex-sale company and an IT company have developed a technology for planning the efficient operation of tankers that connect ports around Japan using artificial intelligence = AI. It means that AI could find the answer in a few minutes from a huge combination of 10 800.

This technology was jointly developed by Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd., a major oil distributor, and an IT company "GRID" in Tokyo.

When transporting oil by tanker to various ports in Japan, it is necessary to make a plan while considering complex factors such as the route, type of ship, and working time at the port. It took me several hours to create it.

This time, AI applied a technology called "reinforcement learning" to find answers from trial and error, and learned conditions such as data of 27 ports nationwide and types of tankers. I made you create a flight plan.

As a result, it was possible to create a plan that was 20% more efficient overall, such as a shorter transportation distance than a plan made by humans.

The number of combinations that need to be calculated is as high as 10 800, but AI has come up with the answer in a few minutes.

Mr. Kan Sogabe of GRID says, “We are showing that AI can now make judgments that are closer to the human brain, and we would like to introduce them to the site from next year to support human judgments.”
