Director Ava DuVernay - AdMedia / Starface

How does one become someone like Colin Kaepernick? This is the question that Ava DuVernay will ask in his new series for Netflix. The director has announced the production of Colin in black and white , a six-episode scripted series that will focus on the young years of the American football player who became an icon in the fight against police violence.

In 2016, the then quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers chose to kneel during the national anthem preceding each game, going against the practice of standing. A gesture that had divided, so much so that the team had not renewed its contract at the end of the season. Since then, Colin Kaepernick has never trod an American football field.

This project has been a joy to work on for the last year with @StarrburyMike. I've long been fascinated by how folks become who they are. The steps we all take to get to ourselves. When it comes to @ Kaepernick7, that story tracks the making of a singular American icon. #imwithkap https://t.co/x5wKf1m4nG

“Colin and his story tell a lot about the identity, the sport and the spirit of protest and resilience that inhabit him. I couldn't be happier telling her story with Netflix, "said Ava DuVernay in a statement from The Hollywood reporter .

All-round

Colin in black and white will tell how the young African-American man, adopted by a white family, ended up becoming one of the spearheads in the fight against racism and police violence in the United States. If his American football career seems more or less compromised (even if the NFL boss, Roger Goodell, recently encouraged the teams to take a closer look at the player), that does not prevent him from multiplying the projects.

He recently signed with Audible to adapt his autobiography into an audiobook, which he plans to publish soon through his own publishing company, Kaepernick Publishing.
