Results of the municipal elections: Record abstention, green wave… What to remember from the second round?

Until the end, the municipal elections will have had their share of surprises and records. The second round of this election took place this Sunday in nearly 5,000 municipalities, more than three months after its postponement. The vote was marked by a new abstention record (around 60%) and a breakthrough by environmentalists, while the traditional parties retained their local roots. Environmentalists won a large victory in Lyon and also won in Bordeaux, Strasbourg, Tours, Poitiers, Besançon and Annecy. They are also on favorable ballot in Marseille thanks to Michèle Rubirola, at the head of a left coalition which however did not obtain an absolute majority. In the capital, Anne Hidalgo, allied with EELV, comes out victorious in the triangular with almost 50% of the votes, far ahead of the candidate LR Rachida Dati (around 32%), and the LREM candidate Agnès Buzyn (between 13.7 and 16%).

Emmanuel Macron receives the Citizen's Climate Convention and intends to provide "strong responses" to ecological expectations

Emmanuel Macron intends to provide "strong responses" and "up to the ecological challenges and expectations" of the French by receiving this Monday morning the members of the Citizen Convention for the climate, the day after a flood of environmentalists at the municipal level, said the Elysée Sunday evening. "The response will meet the challenges and expectations of the members of the Convention and the French," said the president's entourage.

Emmanuel Macron must speak to the 150 members of the Citizen Climate Convention, who will be welcomed from 11 a.m. at the Elysée Palace to present their 149 proposals intended to respond to the climate emergency. For the Head of State, the "green wave" on Sunday constitutes a "barometer of the state of mind of the French" and shows that "ecology is at the heart of their concerns," reported his relatives. Emmanuel Macron also sees in it the success enjoyed by any “disruptive new entrant” even if, according to him, the success of the greens is “relative”, because the elections mainly concerned large cities.

On January 9, China reported the first death from mysterious pneumonia. Six months later, the coronavirus pandemic has killed more than 500,000 people worldwide, according to a count by the American hospital John Hopkins published on Sunday. At the same time, the threshold of 10 million infections has been crossed, and there are undoubtedly many more cases - up to ten times more, according to expert estimates. With infections exploding in the United States, Latin America and the Middle East, and the risk of new clusters in China and Europe, the pandemic is far from being under control, warned the WHO.
