Director David Lynch - Inside / Panoramic / Starface

At 74, David Lynch can look back with the satisfaction of having accomplished an uncompromising and often adulated work, he who has always known how to play with Hollywood constraints. And yet, the director of Mulholland Drive has a small ridge across the throat, and this ridge has no other name than Dune .

"I'm pretty proud of all my films, except Dune,  " he said in response to a fan's question on his YouTube channel. But then, why, more than 30 years later, David Lynch remains unhappy with his adaptation of 1984 which included Kyle MacLachlan, Virginia Madsen, Patrick Stewart or Sting in the casting?

Full control or nothing

One of the main reasons why Dune remains the bane of David Lynch's career is simply because production had not left him in control. “I didn't have the final cut on this film. I did not have total creative control. This is not the film I would have made if I had had the hand. And it's quite sad, ”he lamented already in a previous interview.

For the anecdote, David Lynch had even demanded that his name be removed from the credits and replaced by that of Alan Smithee, pseudonym used by directors who do not want to take on their work.

Slightly forgotten and victim of this paternal disenchantment, this film is worth making your own idea, especially since the Dune of 1984 is currently on Netflix. A good way to immerse yourself in the arid sands of Arrakis while waiting for the adaptation of Denis Villeneuve with Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson and Oscar Isaac, and whose release is set for December 23 of this year.
