• CULTURE.The new edition of PHotoESPAÑA appears on the balcony

Neither was she so fat nor was she really. Divine, the underground icon , the eschatological femme fatale , the muse of the filmmaker John Waters , from half Baltimore and from so many that over several decades saw in her the possibility of transgression "she felt him and not her", that is to say He was a man, specifically Harris Glenn Milstead , and "Divine was a character."

This is what is said by who, in addition to Waters, can be considered not only his companion for work wonders but also his close friend, the photographer Greg Gorman , with whom he shared life in cities like New York and Los Angeles, in infinite dinners and colorful gatherings. Precisely from LA, Gorman relates what Glenn was like - «that's what we called him, never Harris» - on the occasion of a virtual exhibition that, originally, was going to be part of the exhibition that, for PhotoEspaña, the Loewe firm planned to host in its the Gran Vía in Madrid.

Divine is enshrined as the diva she always was in this project in which Gorman, who portrayed her for years and in all possible situations and paraphernalia, has photographed the precious objects that accompanied her and even shaped her during her career. «Her infamous white dress, a mechanical makeup chest, the iconic jacket she wore for her world tour, a gold record, and even posters and magazine covers. The exhibition oozes color, scum, fantasy, fury, glamor and freedom, "lists Jonathan Anderson , creative director at Loewe.

In truth, all those adjectives are the ones that are usually used to talk about an actor who achieved true success with the film Hairspray - later there was a remake and John Travolta recovered his character - in 1988, although perhaps his participation in Pink Flamingos , also directed by John Waters, surely due to the sordological and sordid scope of the film.

The reality is that he did not have too much time to enjoy the summit because that same year he passed away. Photographer Gorman, whose face lights up and his eyes smile when he talks about Glenn, remembers an anecdote from the night before his death, when he accompanied him to the hotel where he spent the night.

"We had dinner, I took him to his hotel and he said goodbye to me from the balcony of his room with a wonderful 'Arrivederci, Rome!'. Months later I made a trip to Europe, I arrived at my hotel in Rome, I put on the TV and who did I find? To Divine. For me, even though it sounds completely surreal, it was as if Glenn said to me 'ok, everything is fine, colleague' ”.

Gorman thinks that another Divine, or something similar to what she supposed and still supposes, would be impossible now because, although she considers that "these are also times of intolerance" - "don't make me talk about President Trump," he laughs. at the beginning of the interview- "the current situation is very different from that of Divine". "At the moment it would not have been considered as scandalous as then, in the late 1960s" when the Divine & Waters duo began their performances .

He also claims his masculine condition, and even his personality practically opposite to what his character suggests . Glenn was very shy, very soft, very calm, at least off-screen. I photographed Divine throughout her life and I don't think she ever, ever, referred to herself as a woman. I don't think, in fact, that she considered herself a woman at any point in her life. Divine was a character.

Gorman met Glenn through another fellow photographer, who insisted they meet, and they have not parted since. «I had fun with him, he appeared in those clothes, those glasses, that makeup. He often stayed to sleep at home, it was wonderful to photograph him, and he was not as fat as it seems, "says who, throughout his artistic career, has portrayed characters of great charisma, starting with Andy Warhol himself , and which ended to make a compilation book.

But Gorman liked being with Divine more than any other star. "I have memories of Divine among the rocks, in the bush, we became best friends, that's the truth, because he was directly a great guy, someone who on stage, or on camera, became a beast."

Loewe x Divine

In addition to the virtual exhibition, which can now be visited and enjoyed, Loewe has launched a campaign in support of two organizations, Visual Aids, which helps artists with HIV, and Baltimore Pride.

Inspired by the liberating spirit and flamboyant style of artist Divine, once labeled "the dirtiest living person", this limited-edition collection celebrates freedom and self-determination and is available only in the street shop Greene in New York and on the firm's website. The bag that you can see in the preceding lines is part of the collection.
