Anne-So Echos de Mots, youth literary blogger and contributor to the reading group "20 Minutes Books", recommends Les Yeux du Dragon  by Stephen King, published on June 10, 2020 by Éditions Flammarion.

His favorite quote:

One of the great advantages of storytelling is that time passes very quickly when it is not marked by any notable event. Life is never like that, and it's probably a good thing. Time passes more quickly in history, but what is history, if not a sort of grandiose tale in which centuries replace years?

Why this book?

  • Because Flammarion editions offer a magnificent edition to this Stephen King novel which has already proven itself in the past and has charmed several generations. Initially, The Eyes of the Dragon was written by the author for his daughter who was not interested in the author's usual dark works. If you feel, of course, a difference with his other works, lovers of Stephen King will still recognize his pen, slightly subdued for the occasion.
  • Because Stephen King handles the tricks of the children's story brilliantly. The Eyes of the Dragon is therefore a real treat. Thus we find key characters of the genre, such as a sweet queen who died, a brave and valiant prince or a wicked and cruel wizard. The intrigue is accessible without being devoid of depth which allows the youngest to enjoy and the oldest to fall back to childhood while being told this thrilling story.
  • Because The Eyes of the Dragon takes place in the universe of The Dark Tower, which will delight fans of the saga. We meet there Flagg, the king's magician, ready to do anything to appropriate power. On the death of King Roland of whom he was the adviser, Flagg will betray the crown and will do everything so that Prince Peter does not reach the throne.
  • Because this dark and fascinating tale is perfect for setting foot in the universe of Stephen King. Between magic, manipulation and the battle of good against evil, the Kingdom of Delain is at the dawn of great changes, for better or for worse. The feather of Stephen King, lightened for the occasion, is superbly enhanced by the powerful and somber illustrations by Nicolas Duffaut. In short, Les Yeux du Dragon is absolutely delicious, both in substance and form.

The essential in 2 minutes

The intrigue.  For four centuries, Flagg has been operating behind the scenes to manipulate those in power for its purposes. On the death of King Roland, his son Peter must succeed him. This could upset Flagg's dark plans, which then set in motion a complex scheme to get rid of the one who bothers him.

Characters.  Prince Peter is the eldest son of King Roland and is to inherit the throne. He is a good and courageous young man, very different from Thomas, his jealous and manipulative young brother. Flagg is a powerful, cruel and fearsome magician who always wants more power.

Places.  The novel takes place in the Kingdom of Delain.

The time.  The plot begins shortly before the mysterious death of King Roland.

The author.  Stephen King is an American author whose first novel, Carrie, was published in 1974. Since then, the one we no longer present has been more than prolific since he has written more than 200 publications in various literary genres.

This book was read with  pleasure by Anne-So Echos de Mots, blogger specializing in children's and teenage literature. “For me, reading can be as much a personal pleasure in which one runs to take refuge as an excuse to exchange and meet other readers. I am a lover of words always interested in new discoveries. "
