Employment at the heart of young people's concerns. According to a survey carried out by local missions, a third of them said they were worried or very worried about their future, given the social crisis linked to the coronavirus.

Among the 16-25 year olds interviewed, one third were employed before confinement, and 42.5% of them lost their jobs during confinement. A third say they are confident, another third worried about the future, a last third neither.

Formations interrupted by containment

Among the worried, three quarters fear not finding a job because of the crisis. The question of employment is at the top of the concerns (77%), followed by the “clarification of the professional project” (66.8%), and the resumption of training (43.7%). For those taking training (20.4%), it was interrupted for almost half of them during confinement.

This interruption rate "raises fears of a massive dropout of hundreds of thousands of young people, who could eventually find themselves without a diploma or qualification, and thus experience double pain when entering the world of work", warns Jean-Patrick Gille, president of the National Union of Local Missions (MNPL), quoted in a press release.

Boredom and isolation

When asked about how they had experienced confinement, a third of young people said they had experienced it badly or very badly, first because of boredom (48.8%) then because of the difficulties in finding a job (40 , 3%), before isolation (36.6%).

This online survey, initiated by local missions, was carried out, with the help of France Stratégie and Cereq (center for studies and research on qualifications), from June 15 to 22. Created in the early 1980s, the local missions (436 in France) welcome young people aged 16 to 25 to help them find jobs, but not only. Integration structures, they also refer them to housing and health, to give them a boost. Each year, they support 1.3 million young people.
