"The night theater" by Carl Aderhold was awarded on Wednesday in our premises for the Europe 1 Literary Prize - GMF, which was the first edition this year. Our literary journalist Nicolas Carreau, sponsor of this edition and member of the jury, explains why it should be read.

Carl Aderhold is a historian by training and draws on historical truth to build his novel  The Theater of Nights , published last January by Stock editions (Arpège collection). "During the First World War, actors went to the front to entertain the Poilus, and cheer them up," says Nicolas Carreau. The army agreed, but there were some conditions for their arrival. "First of all, it was not necessary that these actors were too young so that the Poilus did not wonder why the actors were not mobilized. And then, it was not necessary that the actors were in too close contact with the soldiers for obvious reasons "

A love story between an actress and a soldier

But the rules will obviously be flouted, and a love story will be born between an actress and a soldier. "The actress is called Blanche Baulieu. She is in Paris at the beginning of the story, trying to make a career, but it's very complicated. One day, she is asked to go to the Vosges with Sarah Bernhardt, a magnificent character, as romantic as it was in real life "explains Nicolas Carreau. "The night theater" is a pure novel, but against a background of historical truth. "We really have the impression of visiting this period of history, it's very well done". It is also a novel on women, and "on the power of women who emancipate themselves from men" he concludes.
