To advance the issuance of advice for ship evacuation during typhoons 18:41, June 25, Chiba Port

In preparation for the typhoon season, a committee was held in Chiba City on the 25th to examine new rules regarding the evacuation of ships in Tokyo Bay, and issued an evacuation advisory to allow large ships to evacuate out of the bay with plenty of time. We have confirmed the policy of moving ahead of schedule.

About 30 people attended the meeting, including people related to Chiba Prefecture, the Chiba Coast Guard, and companies with factories located around Chiba Port.

At the meeting, first, in September last year, a case was introduced in which a freighter that had been staying in Tokyo Bay was swept away by a strong wind caused by Typhoon No. 15 and collided with a bridge, affecting logistics.

In addition, in order to prevent such accidents, if a typhoon with a maximum instantaneous wind speed of 40 meters or more is expected to approach Tokyo Bay, large vessels that are easily affected by the wind should evacuate outside Tokyo Bay with plenty of time. We have confirmed the policy of developing new rules to issue evacuation advisories earlier than ever so that we can do so.

This new evacuation rule is being considered in parallel with other areas in Tokyo Bay, such as around Yokohama Port, and is expected to be applied from now on.

Tetsuji Tamakoshi, Chief of Chiba Coast Guard, who is the chief of Chiba Port, said, "We want to improve the safety of ships by allowing them to evacuate out of the bay early when a typhoon approaches."
