The national antiterrorism prosecutor's office (Pnat) announced on Tuesday that it had asked for the referral of nine people to the Paris-based Assize Court, responsible for terrorism, in the investigation into the Nice attack, which made 86 dead.

This possible trial, on which the final decision now rests with the counter-terrorism investigating judges, does not concern the perpetrator, Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel, a 31-year-old Tunisian, shot dead by the police the same evening of the attack. For the three main suspects, the Pnat demands the abandonment of the prosecution for "complicity in assassinations": it wants them to be tried only, with a fourth, for "criminal criminal criminal association".
