Students who discover their results in the bac. - ROMAN CHAMPALAUNE / SIPA

  • The terms of allocation ofbac 2020, marked by the cancellation of the final tests due to the coronavirus, provides for the inclusion of continuous monitoring.
  • 20 Minutes returns in detail on how the juries will deliberate, with the last details given by the Ministry of Education on Tuesday.

"Our first criterion is not to harm the students," promised Jean-Michel Blanquer on April 3, when he presented the way in which the 2020 bac would be awarded. Because of the coronavirus epidemic, there is no question of organizing face-to-face tests.

Applicants will only be assessed on the basis of continuous assessment. And this week, the juries responsible for harmonizing the grades began to work. 20 Minutes takes stock of the subject.

How will students be assessed?

Only the scores of the first and second trimesters before confinement are taken into account, which are presented in the form of averages in each discipline. Means validated by the class council "and rounded up," said the Ministry of Education on Tuesday evening. The school booklets sent by the establishments to the juries can also "enhance the involvement of the student" during confinement and afterwards, in order to inform the juries. They also serve to take into account its progression between the first and the third quarter. "All of these elements were brought up at the end of last week and the juries are starting their work on harmonization this week," said rue de Grenelle.

To do this, the juries will have “statistics relating to the last three years, such as results in the baccalaureate, the rate of mentions and the average of the pupils in the disciplines. This will allow the juries to have elements of context to avoid there being obvious distortions, "indicates the ministry. After deliberation, the juries will award the diploma, with or without mention, send other candidates to catch up and paste others.

Will candidates with poor marks during the year have an advantage?

Claire Guéville, national secretary responsible for the lycée at Snes-FSU, the first secondary school union, doubts. "The averages for the first two terms are most often lower than the marks obtained on the final exam," she said. "We will need guarantees on the proper functioning of juries," she adds. It is true that each year, some students who do not have magic notes tend to give one last shot just before the bac. They could be penalized by taking into account only the first two ballots. And their establishments fear falling in the rankings of high schools, due to a lower rate of mentions this year.

Will those of elitist high schools be harmed?

In some high schools, students are severely graded to push them to surpass themselves. Knowing that they will easily get a mention in the bac. Except that with continuous monitoring, the situation changes. Hence the work of the harmonization juries, which will have access to the students' marks and their assessments. And who will also have statistics from high schools over the last three years, such as the results in the baccalaureate in each series or the rate of mentions. Armed with this data, they will be able to decide to "revalue the annual average" of a candidate, insists the minister. It remains to be seen whether all the juries will do so at the same height.

As for the rumor that some teachers have reported their students' grades before sending them to juries so as not to penalize their students, the ministry does not confirm it. "These are the notes adopted by the class council", recalls rue de Grenelle.

Are the candidates who will go to the remedial oral exams an advantage this year?

Yes, because in view of their marks from the first two trimesters, the candidates were able to calculate whether they would have their bac or not, or if they would take the remedial oral exams (their average will be between 8 and 10/20). And in the latter case, the candidates had more time to prepare for it, these oral examinations being scheduled for July 8 to 10. In addition, their schools can help them more this year: "For these students, we will set up intensive coaching sessions," said Pascal Bolloré, member of SNPDEN, the first union of school leaders.

Finally, this year, some students who obtained less than 8/20 will be able to catch up, if the juries propose it. “Take the example of a candidate whose start of the year was disrupted by a family event, which improved in the second quarter and who invested well in the third. And who got 7.75 / 20 average. We will bring him back to the September session, ”explains the Ministry of Education.

What about the students who were enrolled in a high school without a contract?

For the private sector without a contract, either the establishment is able to deliver a continuous control file which will act as a booklet, or the candidates will have to pass the exams in September, like the free candidates.
