The “Foundation” series is expected in 2021 on Apple TV +. - APPLE

It is one of the monuments of science fiction, with Dune and 2001: The Space Odyssey . On Monday, at its WWDC virtual conference, Apple unveiled the first images of its Fondation series ( Foundation in VO), adapted from the cycle of Isaac Asimov, which will arrive in 2021 on Apple TV +. And the apple company seems to have gone all out to do justice to a work long deemed impossible to adapt.

At the helm, we find the American David Goyer, co-writer of the Dark Night trilogy by Christopher Nolan. Be careful though, he also co-wrote or produced a bunch of turnips ( The Unborn , Jumper , Ghost Rider ) and the dytique Man of Steel - Batman v Superman is far from unanimous.

XXL scale

In Foundation , Asimov chronicles the collapse of a galactic empire over several thousand years. On the screen, we will find with pleasure Jared Harris ( Chernobyl ) in the role of Hari Seldon, the inventor of psychohistory, a fictional science which allows him to predict the big trends to come. Because his predictions are far from pleasing the authorities, he is exiled to a colony of academics on a distant planet.

Apple seems to have taken some liberties by inventing a new galactic emperor (Brother Day), embodied by Lee Pace ( Pushing Daisies , Halt and Catch Fire ) and by choosing a woman, Leah Harvey, for one of the main characters, Salvor Hardin. Described by sexist and racist trolls, the choice of Apple has a simple explanation: like many sci-fi from the 1950s and 60s, Fondation was the fruit of a culture of the time that did not really stand out for its diversity.

With this blockbuster, the Californian company is playing big: even if The Morning Show or For All Mankind do not fail, it still lacks an essential series in its paid streaming service Apple TV + to fight with Netflix, HBO or Amazon. Science fiction fans can rejoice: in addition to the Foundation , the film Dune , by Denis Villeneuve, is still expected at the cinema for Christmas.
