Environmental associations are calling for a big plan for subsistence farming. - J. Gicquel / 20 Minutes

Ten organizations, including NGOs and professional agricultural organizations, called on Monday the government to "respect its commitments" by putting on the parliamentary agenda a land bill intended in particular to encourage the installation of young farmers and the development of agroecology. This advocacy is co-signed by, among others, Greenpeace or the Nicolas Hulot foundation and, on the professional side, by the Peasant Confederation and the National Federation of Organic Agriculture (FNAB).

The text considers it "essential and urgent" to overhaul the current land policy in order to "revitalize and energize our countryside" by facilitating the installation of new peasants and "the transmission of farms in agroecology". According to this collective, it is also a question of "preserving the climate and biodiversity, stopping land grabbing in France and elsewhere, and striving towards food sovereignty".

"Probable" stoppage

This call comes more than ten days after a statement by Didier Guillaume, Minister of Agriculture, referring to a "probable" halt to the development of a land law. During a hearing before deputies, the minister said that it was "probable that there will be [no] land law, given the lag that there has been with judgment of the Parliament ".

"Anything that can be taken by decree, by decree, in a regulatory manner, we will take it," he had promised, however, affirming that it was "out of the question to back down on the subject". This law had been called for by President Macron during his visit to the 2019 Agriculture Show. Referring to the vote by the Citizen Convention for the climate of measures to respond to "the fight against the artificialisation of soils and that the installation of farmers in agroecology ”, the ten organizations urge the government to put this text on the 2021 legislative agenda.
