Living near a wind turbine is not dangerous, say Finnish researchers. In a study published this Wednesday, they ensure that low frequency sounds, inaudible, can not affect human health.

Several studies have already shown that audible noise from wind turbines has no negative health effects - despite the discomfort and sleep disturbances seen in people living nearby. However, this study, conducted for two years at the request of the Finnish government, analyzed the effects of low frequency sound emissions - or infrasound - emitted by wind turbines which cannot be heard by a human ear.

Tinnitus and heart problems

While many researchers in many countries have attributed symptoms ranging from headaches to tinnitus to cardiovascular problems to these infrasounds, the scientists say the results "do not support the hypothesis that infrasound ( …) Cause discomfort ”.

"It is more likely that these symptoms are triggered by other factors such as expected symptoms" by people living near wind turbines. The researchers used interviews, sound recordings and laboratory tests to study the possible effects of these sounds on the health of those living within 20 kilometers of generators.

In addition, tests also did not prove that the sounds of the turbines disturbed the heart rate, according to the same study. Wind energy has developed considerably in recent years, particularly in China, the United States and Brazil. According to a study by the association of the WindEurope sector, last year wind turbines supplied 15% of the electricity consumed in Europe.
