According to statistics, the number of bird resources in the reserve has increased from 12 orders, 20 families and 30 species in the reserve in 1984 to 16 orders, 36 families and 115 species in 2020. Among them, 18 species of birds are included in China's National Key Protected Animals List, including five national Class I key protected animals, including black-necked cranes, relict gulls, black storks, vultures and golden eagles; 13 national Class II key Protected animals are big swans, demoiselle cranes, grey cranes, alpine vultures, vultures, great hawks, prairie eagles, black kites, longitudinal-bellied little owls, short-eared owls, kestrels, hawk falcons, saker falcons, etc.
Qinghai Longbao National Nature Reserve is located in the core area of Sanjiangyuan. It was established as a provincial nature reserve in 1984 and was promoted to a national level in 1986. It is the first national nature reserve in Qinghai Province. The plateau is densely covered with swamps and rich in wetland resources. For a long time, it has provided sufficient food and high-quality habitat for migratory birds such as black-necked cranes, and has become a concentrated area for habitat and reproduction of waterbirds on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
In addition, it is understood that the vegetation types in Longbao National Nature Reserve are mainly alpine grassland meadows and alpine marshes and aquatic vegetation. The plant species increased from 85 species in 26 families and 65 genera in 2017 to 100 genera and 38 families in 2019 159 species. Species are the dominant populations of Cyperaceae, Kobresia, Carex, Flatgrass, Gramineae, Elymus and Stipa.
