A new arms search operation was underway this Monday morning in the Grésilles district of Dijon, following the violence that occurred from June 12 to 15, the public prosecutor, Eric Mathais, told AFP.

This operation is part of the "local plan of strengthened legal action against arms" (Plajurca), a substantive work which has been accelerated following the recent urban violence, said the prosecutor. Unlike the vast police operation, which took place last week and which had mobilized 140 members of the police, this operation is judicial and is therefore under the direct control of the prosecution. The number of police officers mobilized has not been indicated.

Belgian knife, gloves and plates

Friday, during the previous operation, 80g of cannabis resin, a knife, 25 Molotov cocktails, as well as Belgian license plates, a motocross, gloves and hoods had been seized, said the prefecture.

Prefect Bernard Schmeltz then indicated that this police operation was part of the "firmness" approach wanted by the government "to restore peace", following days of tension in Les Grésilles. The public prosecutor said on Wednesday that investigations were continuing "to identify the participants" in the violence that rocked Les Grésilles, but also Chenôve, in the southwest suburbs of Dijon.

Originally, the attack on a teenager

In videos posted on social networks, hooded men appeared equipped with what appeared to be assault rifles or automatic pistols. They also attacked security cameras and set vehicles on fire.

This violence followed a series of reprisals launched by members of the Chechen community, who wanted to take revenge on the assault of a teenager by, according to them, inhabitants of the Grésilles. Calm has returned since Tuesday and the Chechen father of the attacked teenager has called for an end to these abuses. But these have strongly marked the spirits, in a Burgundian capital little used to this type of tensions.

Six Chechens were arrested and placed in police custody on Thursday as part of the separate investigation into the punitive raids. Two were dismissed, while the other four were charged, three of which were immediately placed in pre-trial detention. The fourth suspect remained free under judicial supervision.
