  • Cobain - a million dollar auction

The guitar that Kurt Cobain played on the MTV album Unplugged in New York (1994) was sold this Saturday for 6 million dollars (about 5.3 million euros) at an auction in Beverly Hills (Los Angeles, USA) and became thus in the most expensive of history , according to Julien's house.

The auction house stressed in a statement that the figure represents a "new world record for a guitar ."

The buyer is Australian magnate Peter Freedman , who plans to tour the Nirvana leader's guitar and raise funds for artist support groups.

The bid for this 1959 Martin D-18E acoustic model , which Cobain played in 1994, started at $ 250,000 and quickly surpassed $ 1 million, eventually being sold for $ 6 million.

Until now, the most expensive guitar has been a Fender Stratocaster used by Pink Floyd's David Gilmour, which was sold for $ 4 million in 2019 at a charity auction.

Cobain's guitar bundle also includes the instrument's original case , which the musician decorated with a sticker from the album Feel the Darkness (1990) by the band Poison Idea.

With a much more intimate tone than that of his rabid and tormented studio albums, Nirvana's MTV album Unplugged in New York that Cobain played with that guitar picks up an acoustic concert that the band gave in November 1993 for MTV.

The album was released in November of the following year, about seven months after Cobain's suicide , and became a critical and best-seller.

MTV Unplugged in New York was the first release of Nirvana after the musician's death and earned a place of honor within this group's brief but highly influential discography, which also includes the albums Bleach (1989), Nevermind (1991) and In Utero (1993).

Cult musicians

The bid for the guitar is part of an auction of several objects that belonged to cult musicians and in which the Blue Angel Cloud 2 electric guitar with which Prince played Purple Rain in the 1980s and 1990s has already been sold for $ 563,500 .

Other items for music collectors were also auctioned at Julien's auction, including instruments, gadgets, and trivia from all sorts of stars like Paul McCartney, Jim Morrison, Johnny Cash, and Michael Jackson .
