On June 19, 1739, Captain Martyn Spanberg, a Dane in Russian service, reached the shores of Japan, which at that time had been pursuing a policy of isolation from the outside world for about a century. Several people from his squad went ashore and made contact with the locals, who were welcoming. This event is considered the beginning of Russian-Japanese relations. The ships on which the Russian sailors reached Japan were built at the Okhotsk shipyards, and this journey itself was part of one of the Kamchatka expeditions, the purpose of which was to study and describe the northern lands of Russia. Take our test and check what you know about the history and geography of the peninsula.
