British actor Ian Holm, known from the Lord of The Rings film series and Alien , died on Friday morning at the age of 88. His manager reports this to The Guardian on Friday .

Holm died in front of his family in a hospital in London from Parkinson's disease. "It is with great sadness that we announce that actor Sir Ian Holm passed away this morning at the age of 88," said his manager.

Holm started acting at a young age. For example, he performed in several theater performances in the United Kingdom. From 1960 he was part of the theater company the Royal Shakespeare Company.

In the years that followed, Holm also developed into a film actor. He starred in the science fiction film Alien (1979) and The Fifth Element (1997).

He is best known to the general public for his role as Bilbo Baggins, which he played in the Lord Of The Rings films and the prequel The Hobbit .

Holm was born in 1931 in Essex, UK, and was married to Sophie de Stempel. She captured Holm's last phase of life by making a series of portraits.

The Lord Of The Rings actor received many awards for his work in his career. He won a BAFTA for his role in the movie Chariots Of Fire (1981). He was also nominated for an Oscar for playing this role.

He has also received awards for his roles in theater shows. He won a Tony Award for his Broadway debut in The Homecoming.
